The government of Myanmar blocked social media to avoid manifestations
On the 4th of February, the citizens of Myanmar realised that Facebook and other social media were blocked in their households due to a government decree aimed at avoiding 'false information'.
For a month, there has been a military government in Myanmar, that came to power by a coup d’etat. On the 3rd of February, the government had social media blocked in every household in the country.
“For the Church, this is like returning to the ages of darkness. We have already seen some totalitarian states, where the government blocked the diffusion of information – for example, North Korea and China, and now, Myanmar will be one of these countries. It is unthinkable that this is happening in Myanmar, especially after all progress that the country made to give more liberty to its citizens”, said a partner of Open Doors.
The Ministry of Transport and Communication of Myanmar warned every internet service provider (ISP) to block Facebook and other social media on the 3rd of February, to “avoid the diffusion of false information”. The ISPs were obligated to send evidence of the banning.
With these measures, the government aimed to prevent democratic demonstrations around the country and protect their arbitrary power.
