French Senate rejected “in vitro for all women” bill

After two days of fierce debates and considerable confusion, the French Senate unexpectedly passed the bioethics law without its provision for "in-vitro for all women."

On Wednesday night, the French Senate passed the Bioethics Act, but with no access to so-called medically assisted procreation (PMA) for lesbian couples and single women.

Critics raised the arguments of depriving children of the right to have a father, subordinating the child’s welfare to the whims of adults, or opening the way to a specific child trafficking.

Centre-right senator Bruno Retailleau assessed that “in-vitro without a father is about putting the will of adults over the interests and rights of children.” He added that it is also difficult to understand the will of the government to push through such a law in times of a pandemic.
