Catholic nun attacked by armed men in Zambia

Sister Matilda Mulengachonzi of the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception (LSMI) was found dead. Two months ago, she was attacked and seriously injured in an attack by armed men on the parish of Saint Barbara in the Zambian diocese of Monze.

Another nun, Sister Okafor Assumpta, was also affected by the attack. Fortunately, she was not seriously injured and was speedily discharged from hospital.

The prioress, sister Sylvia Kagulara, is eagerly awaiting the results of the police investigation to find out whether the attack was religiously motivated or it was a classic firearm attack.

In their message of condolence to the LSMI congregation, the bishops of Zambia called the attack “cruel and bestial” and entrusted the soul of Sister Matilda to God’s mercy: “We pray that the Good Lord will accept her religious life and her selfless service to God and faithful.”
