President of Mozambique is worried about jihadist attacks on Catholics
In an interview with the bishop of the Pemba Diocese, Luiz Fernando Lisboa, President Filip Nyusi assured that his services would take steps to free two sisters from the congregation of Saint Joseph of Chambery and a group of over sixty lay Catholics who disappeared after the attack on the city of Mocimboa da Praia carried out by jihadists in August, in the province of Cabo Delgado.
“We still do not have any information about the fate of these people, many of whom were seniors and children,” said Bishop Lisboa.
In late June, Islamic radicals attacked Mocimboa da Praia, destroying the hospital, several schools, and the local church building.
A few days after these events, Mozambique’s bishops and Catholic organisations operating in that country called on the international community to act in response to the increasing attacks by Islamist troops on parishes inhabited by Catholics. The appeal in this matter was directed towards the management of the organisation Aid to the Church in Need.
