Polish conservative government plans to reject the Istanbul Convention
Polish Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy, Marlena Maląg, declared that the government of Law and Justice is preparing to terminate the gender Istanbul Convention. This document was adopted by the previous liberal government.
Minister Maląg talked about the government’s plans on Polish TV Telewizja Trwam. She noted that Poland has already submitted severe criticism regarding the convention.
“We will work together with the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to, first of all, prepare the law and take appropriate steps to introduce certain changes that should be introduced,” she said.
Marek Romanowski, Deputy Minister of Justice, spoke about the possibility of terminating the Istanbul Convention before the presidential election. Importantly, the Istanbul Convention was not accepted by other countries belonging to the Visegrad Group; Slovakia and Hungary opposed the ratification of this controversial document a few months ago.
On the 16th of July, the Christian Social Congress and the Ordo Iuris Institute launched the civic initiative “Yes for the Family, no for Gender.” The initiative consists in taking steps to terminate the Convention. In the face of the declarations of Minister Maląg and Deputy Minister Romanowski, there is a chance that the government will actually deal with this long-postponed issue.
