On the 6th of May, 58 countries signed a joint statement on protecting sexual and reproductive health (contraception and abortion) and rights promoting gender-responsiveness in the COVID-19 crisis.

The text was signed by 39 Ministers of International Relations, on behalf of the people and governments of 58 countries. In the statement, they declare that, “Funding sexual and reproductive health and rights should remain a priority to avoid a rise in maternal and newborn mortality, an increased number of unsafe abortions and sexually transmitted infections.” They also want to improve the unmet need for contraception.

Later in the statement they write:

As our national and international supply chains are impacted by this pandemic, we recommit to providing all women and girls of reproductive age with reproductive health products. And we call on governments around the world to ensure full and unimpeded access to all sexual and reproductive health services for all women and girls.

As a response to this statement, the American Center for Family and Human Rights (C-Fam) published an article, and condemned the pro-women measures of the UNO.

In this article they write that ‘sexual and reproductive health’ is an expression that comprehends abortion, and highlight that the UNO treats abortion as an essential health care service.

The article also mentions that the UNO has a human rights panel, called the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) that intends to provide to the countries ‘confidential access to information about sexual and reproductive health, such as modern forms of contraception, and safe abortion services” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
