Algeria: new Constitution to protect Islamic identity
COVID-19 has delayed but not prevented Algeria’s constitutional revision process from moving forward. At the end of March, President Abdelmajid Tebboune received the constitutional amendments which had been prepared since January, International Christian Concern reports.
Amendments will be shared among civil society organizations for their comments and suggestions. Christian leaders report that they have not been asked to share their thoughts regarding the amendments. After the civil society process completes, a popular referendum is expected.
In every media opportunity, Tebboune has said that he desires “a profound constitutional amendment to establish a new republic, and that all articles are open to discussion, except for the country’s constants and its Arab, Berber, and Islamic identity.”
