Pope Francis set to visit Hungary to take part in the International Eucharistic Congress

The announcement has not yet been officially confirmed by the Vatican, however, the Hungarian news channel said, but it cited unnamed sources as saying that the pontiff’s trip to Hungary was expected in the autumn. Hungary has not had a papal visit since Pope John Paul II visited the country in 1996.

Pope Francis is slated to visit Hungary Sept. 20, on the closing day of the International Eucharistic Congress, according to public television M1, as Dailynewshungary reports  The announcement has not yet been officially confirmed by the Vatican, the news channel said, but it cited unnamed sources as saying that the pontiff’s trip to Hungary was expected in the autumn.

President János Áder invited Pope Francis during a recent audience in the Vatican and remarked the pope showed keen interest in the programme of the Eucharistic Congress.

Áder said that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and the Holy See as well as the 30th anniversary of their re-establishment.

The president previously noted Pope Francis’s visit to Csíksomlyó (Sumuleu Ciuc), Transylvania (Romania), last year had been a “tremendous success” among Catholics, adding that the pontiff “will surely receive a similarly loving welcome from Hungarian believers”.
