“In recent years, thousands of civilians have been killed in attacks by Islamist Boko Haram and Fulani militias in northern and central states. The underlying causes of the conflict are complex, however the targeted violence and the atrocities perpetrated against predominantly Christian communities suggest that religion and ideology are a key element […] Cox explained that the Christian communities are specifically targeted.

“Reliable sources claim that more than 5,000 Christians have been killed since 2015, 1,000 murdered in 2019. The Global Terrorist Index for 2016 and 2017, designated the Fulani militias as the fourth largest terrorist group in the world: only Boko Haram, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and the al-Shabaad group overtake them as murderers. In many of these attacks, the Fulani, survivors reported, shouted “Allahou Akbar”, “let us eliminate the infidels” and “drive out the infidels”, Cox explained.

During a recent visit to Nigeria in November [2019], I met survivors from five villages attacked by the Fulani militias, which forced 12,000 people to flee. In two of these villages, 116 people were killed. It was only possible to meet a limited number of survivors, but the consistency of their testimony is deeply disturbing, and consistent with the evidence collected during previous stays. These are troubling statistics (…)” she added.
