Watchdogs warn that disinformation can lead to discrimination of Christians
A U.S.-based watchdog panel has raised concerns about the growing use of misinformation and disinformation by foreign governments to suppress the rights of religious minorities.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a bipartisan body advising the government and Congress on global religious freedom issues, highlighted countries such as China, India, and Russia in its report titled “Misinformation and Disinformation: Implications for Freedom of Religion and Belief.”
The report warns that some governments are actively spreading false narratives and denying the existence of official policies targeting religious communities. This misinformation and disinformation, the report emphasizes, can fuel violence against religious minorities and foster an environment where their international legal right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) is violated.
According to USCIRF, the spread of misinformation and disinformation restricts religious freedom in two key ways: by directly targeting religious groups and by creating conditions that facilitate violations of their rights.
