Two church elders sentenced to prison in China
Hao Ming and Wu Jiannan, elders of Sichuan’s Qiuyu Qingcaodi Church, were sentenced to three years in prison with a five-year suspended sentence and have to pay a 30,000 yuan fine as well.
The first atrocities against the Qiuyu Qingcaodi Church in Sichuan happened in 2018. Police forces raided the church multiple times through the years. Public security officials accused the church of illegal meetings and forced them out of the building where they held their gatherings. Officials also banned the believers from further religious activities.
After the closure of their church, believers still held meetings in a park, where government officials monitored them closely. In December 2023, police arrested and detained elders Hao Ming and Wu Jiannan. They were detained until March 2024, when they were released on bail. However, the local court sentenced them to prison shortly after their release.
The Jingyang district court of Deyang City, Sichuan, sentenced both elders to three years in prison with a five-year suspended sentence and a fine of 30,000 yuan. The elders were arrested and sentenced because they publicly protested the persecution of their church.
