Pakistani Christian woman, Musarrat Bibi lives under constant threat

In May 2023, she was falsely accused of burning the Quran. Even though she was acquitted of false blasphemy charges, she lost her job and lives in hiding.

In May 2023, Musarrat Bibi, a Christian office worker, and Muhammad Sarhad were falsely accused of burning the Quran at the Government Girls High School in Tehsil Arifwala, in Pakpattan Sharif, Punjab, Pakistan.

They were saved from mob lynching but charged with blasphemy, which is a crime punishable by death in Pakistan. Despite pressure from local Islamic radicals, the judge acquitted both on December 8. It is revealed that the rumours of burning the Quran came from a Muslim teacher who worked at the same school. She wanted Bibi to clean the toilets, who insisted it was not her job.

Even though she is innocent, it does not mean her trials are over. She receives death threats daily, and she has lost her job. The school told her that she could not work there because her presence would put the school at risk of mob or terrorist attacks.

Being a window with no earnings, she had to leave her home and now lives with her daughter, hiding from the mobs who are threatening her.

That is an example of how blasphemy laws can ruin the lives of innocent people.
