More than three hundred kidnapped students released by Boko Haram in Nigeria
The 344 students who were abducted on the night of the 11th of December from a school in Katsina have been released. Boko Haram assumed responsibility for the attack.
After the release of the students, the jihadist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the kidnapping through an unverified video and audio message however Katsina state authorities say the mass kidnapping is the work of local criminal groups.
In recent years, Boko Haram’s decades-long conflict with the army has been concentrated in the north-eastern part, involving neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger. If the insurgents were involved in the assault on Kankara, it could represent an expansion of the areas threatened by the group.
