Cross ripped from Syrian Church

The cross of the Saint Sergius and Bacchus Greek Orthodox Church in the Syrian city of Tabqa was removed last Friday by radical Islamists.

The church had already been significantly destroyed in the civil war, and the city government previously restored the cross as a way of encouraging Christians to return. According to many, this incident occurs as several anti-Christian activities are occurring throughout the Middle East in response to heightened tensions between Turkey and France. These tensions are framed in extremist religious terms that worry many within the region and have led to more serious consequences in some instances.

In recent years, many Christians have left Syria, due to the civil war, and persecution, and have little desire to return to their home country. These kinds of incidents confirm their decision to leave and discourage the few Syrian Christians who remain.
