Rebelo de Sousa, who describes himself as Catholic, explained that he was most concerned about the number of pilgrims that could appear at the celebration of the end of the 103rd anniversary of the Marian apparitions on the 12th and 13th of October.

Although insisted that he is a “sympathiser of the Fatima Shrine,” he wonders whether in a country where about 600 COVID-19 infections are recorded every day, such large-scale celebrations can be organised without any public health consequences.

On Monday, the socialist government of Antonio Costa announced that it did not plan to introduce restrictions on the number of people participating in the celebrations in Fatima. However, he recalled the need to respect the 1.5-metre social distance and the obligation to wear protective masks in the Fatima sanctuary, including in the open air.
