Maryland churches can hold Mass but… without Holy Communion!

Officials in Howard County (Maryland, USA) allowed churches to open, but forbade anyone – including the priest, to receive Holy Communion during the liturgy. This rule effectively prevents the Mass from being celebrated. The authorities cite public health principles for places of worship that prohibit the distribution and consumption of any food or drink as part of a service.

According to the implemented provisions allowing the resumption of business activity, as well as the opening of churches, it was apparently not taken into account that the integral part of the Eucharist is the consumption of consecrated hosts, at least by the celebrant.

“Recognising this as unlawful action effectively blocks the celebration of any Mass” notes the American Catholic agency CNA, which also points out that these guidelines may violate the right to free exercise of religious practices, which is guaranteed by the constitutional First Amendment.

The directive by officials limits the number of liturgy participants to ten people indoors and 250 outside. The faithful must keep a two-metre distance between themselves, wear masks, and not give the sign of peace by shaking hands.
