Iraq: absence of rule of law is a driver of persecution

International Christian Concern: Iraq’s struggle to name a Prime Minister continues to be an example of why so many Christians point to an absence of law as a driver of persecution.

Iraq has gone through three Prime Minister designates this year, with Mustafa al-Khadimi receiving the latest nomination on 9th of April, International Christian Concern reported.

Al-Khadimi was the head of Iraq’s National Intelligence Service. Upheaval surrounding the Prime Minister position comes as Iran attempts to maintain its political and military influence in Iraq.

Iran’s attempts to strengthen their position through Iraq’s Prime Minister has led to dangerous posturing between the many armed groups within the country. Christians remember the early 2000s and how competing militias and an absence of government led to the first massive wave of persecution which then led to immigration.
