The Archbishop of Brisbane, Mark Coleridge criticised the law authorising abortion in the state of Queensland, Australia. According to Coleridge: “Cheering and rejoicing in the Queensland parliament after the abortion vote seemed like dancing on the graves of unborn children.”

On the 17th of October, the parliament of the state of Queensland voted in favour to legalise abortion up until the 22nd week of pregnancy. The law also allows abortion after the 22nd week with medical approval. The final count was 50 votes in favour and 41 against.

In addition, there will be a 150-meter security area around the abortion clinics to impede people who wish to dissuade women from having an abortion, organise demonstrations for life or organise prayer services for the souls of the unborn.

Fr. Coleridge wrote on his Twitter account after the result of the vote was made public:

“Applauding and rejoicing in parliament at the results of this vote is like… dancing on the graves of unborn children who will themselves rise up in judgement when the time comes.”

The prelate affirmed his statement in another Tweet: “The conscience vote on abortion in the Queensland parliament now looks  like a macabre dance with poorly formed or anaesthetised consciences waltzing with political expediency and personal opportunism.”

The only Australian states where abortion is still illegal are South Australia and New South Wales.
