The image of Baphomet is the protest symbol of Satanists and atheists

Worshipers of Satan in Arkansas are fighting for Satanism to be recognised as a religion and given the same rights as Christianity. On the 16th of August, they received permission from the American Justice  Department to erect a bronze sculpture of Baphomet, an occult deity, and one of the most famous symbols of Satanism.

The statue is located on the square in front of the building of the Government of the State of Arkansas, in its capital,  Little Rock.

The construction, financed by the Satanic Temple, was erected as a sign of protest. It signifies their opposition to another monument that commemorates the Ten Commandments and was built by a Christian church on the same square.

The sculpture of Baphomet is about 2.5 metres high and presents the face of a goat sitting on a throne with two children, one on either side.  While there is only temporary permission for the statue, the constructors have commenced the process of having the structure permanently displayed on the Square.

The co-founder of the Satanic Temple in Arkansas, Ivy Forrester told the ‘Independent’ news-agency: “If a religious sculpture can be built in a public place, then the government has to permit the erection of others.  If you did not permit the construction of our statue, neither should you allow the others.”

The construction of Satanic-themed sculpture generated indignation in the local Christian community. Jason Rapert, a conservative politician said that the statue of the Satanists was offensive and he promised to do everything in his power to have it removed. Some time ago, he pioneered the project to keep the Ten Commandments Memorial. Rapert said that he respects all religions, but according to him, the Satanic Temple is composed of extremists.

Another group comprised of atheist activists participated in the inauguration of the new sculpture alongside the Satanists. There were many speakers at the event with some insisting that the presence of the Ten Commandments Memorial infringed on the separation of  Church and State.

About 150 people participated in the inauguration that was organised by the Satanic Temple. A small group of Christians protested against the inauguration of the sculpture.  They stood some metres apart with protest posters and sang Christian songs.
