13 people died in stampedes at Nigerian church Christmas events
Charities distributing food and clothes in two separate locations faced tragedies that ended more than a dozen people's lives.
The first episode happened at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja on Saturday, where ten people lost their lives and more than 1,000 had to be evacuated. Retired Commissioner of Police Lawrence Alobi pointed out that planning had been inadequate and they could not control the massive number of desperate people. Starving families risked their lives for basic necessities, such as bags of rice. The church cancelled the charity event. Food and clothing supplies are still at the premises at this point.
Another stampede took three people’s lives in south-eastern Anambra state’s Okija town at a charity event organised by a philanthropist. According to the police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga: “The event had not even started when the rush began.”
Video footage from Abuja shows lifeless bodies on the ground, as others are crying for help. Many people also suffered injuries, some of them had to be taken to hospital. Civil Society Organisations describe these tragic deaths as symptoms of a worsening hunger crisis.
The Archbishop of Abuja, Most Reverend Ignatius A. Kaigama voiced his sadness over the disastrous events: “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and injured. May God grant them the strength and comfort they need during this difficult time. Let us come together as a community to pray for the souls of the departed, for the healing of the injured, and for the consolation of all those affected by this tragedy.”
The Police High Command has issued new guidelines requesting event organisers to give advance notification. The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo- Olu have mandated official approvals for functions.
Nigeria has faced one of the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades. During President Bola Tinubu’s term, their currency has dropped extremely low against the dollar, causing major inflation. Mass protests broke out over economic desperation. At least 20 people were shot dead and hundreds were arrested during demonstrations demanding better opportunities and jobs for young people in August of this year.
