Almost a hundred Christians massacred in Nigeria
Fulani herdsmen targeted Christian villages in Benue and Taraba States in Nigeria. In a short span of time, the gunmen killed at least 94 Christians, including women, children, and a pastor.
On November 24, armed Fulani herdsmen carried out an attack against Christian villages in Logo and Katsina-Ala counties. The group of herdsmen, consisting of more than 300 people armed with various weapons, massacred 30 Christians and wounded many more during the attack. Benjamin Uzenda, former member of the Logo Local Government Council, described the attack in an interview with Christian Daily-Morningstar News:
“The Fulani herdsmen, armed with deadly weapons, shot sporadically at the Christians, butchered some victims with machetes, and destroyed their crops and farmlands.”
Another incident happened on December 1, when a group of well-armed Fulani herdsmen killed 18 Christians. The group of Christians, including women and children, were on their way to church service in Logo County, Azege Village when the gunmen attacked. Sen. Emmanuel Udende of Benue state brought up the latest attack in the National Assembly’s December 5th meeting.
“These attacks perpetrated by herdsmen have continued unabated, undermining security, peace, and the socio-economic stability of the affected communities”
said Emmanuel Udende. The senator also mentioned that Fulani herdsmen carried out multiple attacks against Christian villages, killing more than 46 people since October 22. Abba Moro, Senate Minority Leader, urged the investigation of these killings.
In Tarba state, unknown gunmen broke into the apartment of Titi Edward, a young student, and the neighboring home of Pastor Clement Anthony. The assailants fired multiple shots in both cases, killing both the pastor and the student. Usman Abdullahi, spokesman for the Taraba State Police Command, said that the perpetrators did not take anything nor kidnap anyone, raising the possibility of Islamic extremism-fueled killing.
On December 5, Taraba state governor Kefas Agbu’s family members were also attacked. The governor, a Christian man’s mother and his sister were attacked on the Kente Road, Wukari County, when gunmen opened fire, shot, and wounded them. The two women were sent to a hospital where their wounds were treated.
