Iranian Christians tortured in jail
Iranian authorities arrested three Christian men in September and used torture as a method to make them renounce their faith during interrogation. The three men were arrested last Christmas together with seventeen other Christians.
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps arrested three Christians this September. They were detained for two months before being released on bail on November 17. Reportedly, during the time of their detention, they were subjected to mental and physical torture. Their interrogators used torture to make them confess and renounce their Christian faith. The torturers said that renouncing their faith was the price of their freedom.
“Jahangir, Hamed and Gholam were reportedly subjected to physical as well as psychological torture during prolonged interrogations and asked to write letters renouncing their Christian faith and expressing remorse for their actions in order to secure their release.”
Article 18, an organization promoting and defending religious rights in Iran, reported the case. The three Christians were among those 20 Christians who were arrested last Christmas and charged with “propagating a religion contrary to Islam” and “collaborating with foreign governments.” After their arrest the previous Christmas, authorities released the three men, but their freedom was short-lived; within twelve months, they were arrested twice.
Iran claims to uphold the religious freedom of Christians; however, it treats the believers who converted to Christianity as if they were not Christians. Authorities often target them, and they are continuously subjected to harassment.
