Family members murder recently converted teacher in Uganda

The brothers of 32-year-old Wanjala Hamidu beat him to death after finding out he had become a Christian on the 4th of October.

Hamidu put his faith in Christ during an evangelistic event in Bulange. His brother, Wulasiyo Swamadu, accompanied him, but when Hamidu wanted to stay for further Christian lectures, his brother left and reported him to other Muslim family members.

According to Christian sources from Masita – Hamidu’s home village – the head teacher of the Islamic school, where Hamidu had worked, planned to sack him at the end of the school term.

Hamidu’s brothers visited the school and spoke with the head teacher. The school’s administrative team approved Hamidu’s removal from school property on the 21st October. The brothers ordered Hamidu to renounce his Christian faith. When he refused, one of them slapped his face, and the others took out sticks to perform the 39 blows – a violent ritual that Islam prescribes for traitors.

Hamidu’s mother was crying out for help, but locals did not dare to challenge the Muslims and their avenger punishment. According to Sharia law, apostasy is a crime punishable by death.

The Christian source, who wishes to remain anonymous, recalled the tragedy: “We heard a very loud cry, wailing and alarm that required help and attention, so neighbours thronged in large numbers to the scene of the incident. When we arrived, we found Hamidu on the ground held tightly by his three brothers bleeding as the brothers were shouting, ‘Infidel, infidel, shame, shame to our family.’ Soon he was dead and lying in a pool of blood. He had deep injuries in the head and chest from a sharp object that hit him.”

The Christian witness reported the incident to the police, but the brothers had fled. Authorities are still searching for them.

A second anti-Christian murder occurred in Uganda during October. 29-year-old evangelist, Emmanuel Dikusooka, was slain on the 30th after converting 18 Muslims to Christianity during an event in Kaliro District. He was killed when he refused to return to Islam.
