Speaker Mike Johnson criticized for saying a man cannot become a woman
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is facing criticism from progressives following remarks he made to reporters on Tuesday, asserting that "a man cannot become a woman," a statement he said is rooted in Scripture.
His comments coincided with discussions about a bill introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), aimed at prohibiting biological men from using women’s restrooms in the U.S. Capitol.
Mace’s proposal is widely viewed as a response to Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.), the first openly transgender member of Congress, who is a biological man identifying as a woman.
“For anybody who doesn’t know my well-established record on this issue, let me be unequivocally clear: A man is a man, and a woman is a woman,” Johnson told reporters. “A man cannot become a woman. […] That’s what Scripture teaches” — what I just said.
