Pastor and family burned to death in Uganda

Pastor Weere Mukisa, his wife Annet Namugaya, and their two young daughters died in a fire that an Islamist mob deliberately caused on the 13th October.

The church leader’s brother, James Tusubira recalled details of the brutal attack: “When the three young Muslims converted to Christ, my brother started receiving threatening messages that he should stop any contact with the three young converts, and that the act committed is against teaching of Islam to not join the religion of infidels.”

Tusubira confirmed he had seen flame and smoke arising from the pastor’s home around 3am in the early morning of the 13th October: “We rushed to the scene of the incident and found the house torched and the five bodies burned beyond recognition. Many people started arriving till the break of the day. Plastic bottles of petrol were found outside the house.”

The assailants lived in a nearby village and had been known to the pastor. The local police have been chasing the perpetrators since. The Christian community of Kibale village, Namutumba District is still in shock after the gruesome attack.

Another incident took place in Nankoma, Bugiri District, where a young wife and mother, Hidaaya Nabafa was severely beaten and suffered an acid attack. The 27-year-old converted to Christianity in August. She attended church services in secret, however, her Muslim husband discovered Nabafa’s conversion. He attacked his wife and poured battery acid on her, causing serious injuries that would require reconstructive surgery. Nabafa was admitted to hospital.

The young Christian woman provided an account of the assault: “When I came back at 4 p.m., I found my husband at home, and he asked me about where I have been; I kept quiet for a while. At last, I decided to tell him the truth that I gave my life to Jesus. Upon hearing my confession, he got annoyed and boxed me and started beating me up. I tried to make an alarm for rescue, but all in vain. I lost consciousness, only to find myself in the hospital bed.”

Even though Uganda’s constitution promotes religious freedom, including the right to convert, anti-Christian attacks have been increasing. Muslims make up only 12% of the population, most of them grouped in the eastern part of the country.
