Cambodian activists hospitalized during hunger strike in jail
Theary Seng, an esteemed Christian, human rights activist, and Bible editor, is serving her six-year sentence in prison. Now, during her hunger strike, she had to be hospitalized due to her health.
Theary Seng is a Cambodian-US citizen, lawyer, human rights activist, and Bible editor. In 2022, the police arrested her after a court found her guilty of the charges of treason. She became one of the victims of the mass trials that the government used to crack down on its political opponents.
Since then, Theary Seng is spending her six-year sentence in prison. Recently, she started a hunger strike as a protest against the incarceration of 60 political prisoners. One of her family sources said,
“Despite the bare-bones cell and limited resources, she isn’t letting the situation dampen her spirits because she is suffering for a cause beyond herself.”
However, during her hunger strike, she had to be put under observation in a prison hospital due to the risk to her health. The US proposed a visa ban on Cambodian officials because of the wrongful imprisonment of Theary Seng.
