Second attack in seven weeks in Nigeria’s Ondo State

ICC previously reported on the attack on a Catholic church that left dozens dead in Owo, a village in Nigeria’s Ondo State. Just seven weeks later, on July 27, the same village was attacked again.

The attack occurred at the Folahami Junction, near the Craneburg Construction Company, where armed militants came and shot at people working there. It was also reported that several explosives were used during the attack.

A spokesman for the state police, Funmi Odunlami, responded to the attack but did not believe it to be a terrorist attack. She reported that three people were injured “during a shootout in town,” and was unable to identify the attackers.

In a statement, she said “Tonight, there was a shooting incident at Craneburg Construction Company Owo, Policemen are currently at the scene, victims have been taken to Hospital and they are in stable condition. We cannot ascertain the casualty figure now and we also cannot say it was a terrorists’ attack with the use of explosives devices but tomorrow (Thursday) morning, the EOD men of the command would go to the scene.”

This is the second attack in the town of Owo in the last seven weeks after the St. Francis Catholic Church attack on June 5, which killed over 50 Christians, and held a mass burial for those injured in the attack.
