Attempted arson attack on Cape Town Cathedral
On the night of the 6th of February, South African firefighters were mobilised to put out a fire in the Saint George Cathedral, where Desmond Tutu is buried.
The fire started at 2 AM in the Cathedral’s basement, where Desmond Tutu’s body rests. According to Michael Weeder, the Dean of the Cathedral, the fire was an intentional arson attack. He explained in a note to the parishioners that a person was seen fleeing from the Cathedral after the fire broke out.
He also added that a piece of burning fabric might have been hurled through the window near the main entrance of the Cathedral.
Fortunately, the firefighters arrived in time to control the fire, and the Cathedral did not suffer any permanent damage.
