Junta’s arson attacks in Chin State continue to target churches
Two more churches were destroyed by the Burmese Army (Tatmadaw) in the latest arson attacks in Chin state’s Thantlang. According to Chin Human Rights Organization, on January 3, the Tatmadaw burned more than 40 structures in the now abandoned Thantlang, including Gospel Baptist Church, Methodist Church, and their living quarters.
The rights group also noted that as of Jan 3, 727 houses and structures, including seven churches and a dozen religious buildings have been burned in Thantlang since Sept. 9 as the junta continues to engage in arson attacks. The troops responsible are from Light Infantry Division 66, Light Infantry Battalion 269, Light Infantry Battalion 11, and Light Infantry Battalion 222.
Similar to the 2017 attacks against Rohingya Muslims, the Tatmadaw is now burning down houses in areas where they face their “enemy”— except the victims now are supporters of anti-junta resistance or even innocent civilians.
The arson attacks will likely continue despite the fact that the town’s 10,000 residents have fled to nearby areas to seek safety.
