A major fire ravages the Church of Listuguj in New Brunswick
The Sainte-Anne-de-Ristigouche Church in the Canadian province of New Brunswick was engulfed in flames on Monday evening. An investigation is underway to identify the cause of the fire.
Emergency services were alerted around 9:30 p.m. Monday (Quebec time). Firefighters from Campbellton and Pointe-à-la-Croix assisted the Listuguj teams in extinguishing the blaze.
Despite their efforts, the church tower collapsed in the middle of the night. A person who resided part-time in the presbytery was able to leave the building unscathed.
Firefighters remained on site for hours and had to intervene to extinguish small fires that reignited on occasions. At the end of the afternoon, a small team of firefighters was still on the lookout near the church. Listuguj police will also be on-site overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday to prevent people from venturing into the rubble.
