In 2019, Viktor Orbán, the President of Hungary, received Salar Kajot, the parish priest of Tel Askif. The priest talked about the difficulties and suffering of the local Christian community. After the meeting, the Hungarian government sent aid to Tel Askif to help with the reconstruction of the village.

With the help of the Hungarian government, nine-hundred-and-fifty Christian families could return to their reconstructed homes.

During his journey to Iraq, Tristan Azbej, State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians, visited Father Salar Kajo. They prayed together for the persecuted Christians in the church, which was rebuilt with the Hungarian government’s aid.

On his Facebook page, Tristan Azbej writes:

“We, at the Hungary Helps Program, believe that we have to bring help to the place where the difficulty is, and we should not let the trouble come here. As a sign of honour, the local community members call their town Tel Askuf dint al Madjar, which means Tel Askuf, Hungary’s daughter”.
