The thirty-five-year-old woman was kidnapped along with her husband and seven children; they lived as hostages for two years in a forest in Nigeria.

A Christian lady, Hannatu Ezra was kidnapped along with her family and held as a hostage in the Sambisa forest, which is the shelter of Boko Haram, in Borno state, Nigeria.

Until their kidnapping, they lived in the town of Maiduguri farming. In 2017, when they were going home from the church, they heard that radicals have been killing people in other towns of the region in broad daylight. The day after the news broke, they decided to leave and got on a bus.

During the farewell, the bus was stopped by armed jihadists. Many people were shot dead, among them their fifteen-year-old daughter and the newborn baby of Hannatu. The terrorists then gathered the survivors and took them into the Sambesia forest.

“They said if we do not renounce Jesus, they would not take care of us. And we always had to stay away from them because they said that we were disgusting,” remembers Hannatu.

According to her, the hostages did not get food, not even when the children begged. Many of the people ate grass for a long time.

In her captivity, the woman was wondering if anyone knew what had happened to them. In these difficult moments, she turned to God in her prayers and repeated the Gospel 10.29 of John that says: “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[a]; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.”
