According to the NC Register portal, citing the local newspaper Kronen Zeitung, the attacker tried to enter the church of St. Rupert, where a group of young people gathered. Unable to get into the locked building, he sought another entrance to the temple until he was shot dead by the police.

The Archdiocese of Vienna reported that there were seventeen people in the church at that time. Hearing the shots, they turned off the lights, closed the door, and hid. They only left the temple at 2.30 am, when the police allowed them to leave.

The Austrian Ministry of the Interior gave the name of the attacker. It was Kujtim Fejzulai, a twenty-year-old Austrian who was sentenced to twenty-two months in prison last year for attempting to go to Syria to join the Islamic State. According to local media, he was released ahead of his parole.

Austria’s minister of education, Susanne Raab, said in a press conference that Fejzulai had repeatedly visited two Viennese mosques after his release from prison; Melit Ibrahim in the Ottakring district and Tawhid in the Meidling district.
