Belarusian authorities canceled the passport of Archbishop Kondrusiewicz
The State Border Committee, in a letter addressed to the head of Belarusian Catholic, Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, informed him about the invalidity of his Belarusian passport. This was the reason for not allowing the archbishop to enter his own country.
The letter was signed by the chairman of the State Border Committee (GPK), Anatol Łapo. It added that Archbishop Kondrusiewicz has the right to refer this decision to the Belarusian Ministry of the Interior. The Metropolitan of Minsk and Mogilev has already made such a referral.
On the 31st of August, Archbishop Kondrusiewicz was not admitted to Belarus at the western border (Poland).
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced on the 1st of September that Archbishop Kondrusiewicz” suddenly went to Warsaw for consultations and was given specific tasks there.”
The Belarusian authorities accuse the West (mainly the U.S. and Poland) of interfering in the country’s internal affairs. The cancelling of Kondrusiewicz’s passport takes place in a context that fits this narrative.
Presidential elections took place on the 9th of August in the country. The official results gave Lukashenko over 80% of the votes. Since then, Belarusians have been protesting regularly all across the country. Last Sunday, over 100,000 people went on the streets of Minsk to express their disapproval of what is often referred to as a dictatorship. Lukashenko has indeed been in power since 1994.
