A record number of vandalised temples has been recorded in 2019 in Spain
Last year, a record number of temples were targeted by vandals in Spain according to the statistics of the Observatory for Religious Freedom and Conscience.
Statistics show that the phenomenon of the destruction of Catholic churches in Spain is increasing. While the number of attacks on temples in 2014 did not exceed eight, there were as many as forty-four cases recorded in 2019.
Last autumn, a group of three senators called on members of parliament to take steps to protect the mainly Catholic churches in Spain, in the face of the growing number of acts of vandalism, the largest since the civil war in the country (1936-1939).
Politicians, asking for legal measures to protect the space of religious worship, noted that the number of attacks on religious people was also gradually increasing.
