Hungary opposed to the Istanbul Convention: “We don’t support gender ideology”

The wide majority of Hungarian parliamentarians are in favour of a political declaration rejecting the ratification of the Istanbul Convention.

The declaration, submitted by the co-ruling Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP), urged the Hungarian government not to “take steps to recognise the convention” and to “take the position in the EU institutions that the Union should not join this document.”

The document emphasises that the Istanbul Convention is based on the definition of the so-called gender, and the Hungarian parliament does not want to incorporate the concept of gender into national law and does not share the views contained in the convention.

“We have the right to protect our country, our culture, our rights, traditions and national values, which cannot be threatened by a gender ideology that deviates from the beliefs of the majority,” says the declaration that has been adopted by an absolute majority.

Also, the convention’s gender-based rules on asylum are not consistent with Hungary’s legal environment, which seeks to take effective action against illegal migration, the declaration says.
