Denmark: Mosque receives permission to broadcast Islamic call to prayer over loudspeaker

A mosque in Århus, Denmark’s second largest city, has received permission from local authorities to broadcast its Islamic call to prayer from a loudspeaker. The mosque, named the Mosque of Peace, is located in the crime-ridden district called Gellerup. Islamic calls to prayers already exist in mosques in several western European cities.

The mayor of Århus, Jacob Bundsgaard of the Social Democrat party, has previously denied that the Mosque would receive permission to broadcast the prayey. However, Anders Glahn, a leader for youth school issues in the Århus town council, revealed that it was he who gave the permission to the mosque, Den Korte Avis reports.

Britta Mogensen, a writer for the conservative news site Denkorteavis raises objections and says: “Muslim prayer calls do not belong in Denmark”.

Morgensen argues that it won’t be long before other mosques in the country are using minarets for prayer calls. Before that happens, however, she argues that lawmakers should prohibit it.
