Michigan: a priest celebrated Mass in a parking lot in front of the church

In an attempt to give his faithful access to the Eucharist, Fr. David Gillilan of the Brotherhood of Saint Pius X (SSPX) decided to celebrate a Mass on a field altar next to his church.

In the state of Michigan, restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic also included religious associations. Fr. Gillilan came up with an unusual idea, given that no more than 50 people can participate in religious ceremonies.

On Sunday the 22nd of March he celebrated the “Parking Lot Mass.”  The faithful assisted at the Mass sitting in their the cars in the parking lot. The initiative gained widespread popularity and attracted more people than usually seen at Sunday Masses.

Due to the restrictions of the country brought by the rampant pandemic, priests are looking for new forms of pastoral ministry such as online masses, community rosary, confession in parking lots without leaving the car or adoration outside the churches.

In Michigan, over 1,800 cases of coronavirus infections have been reported. In the USA, the number is as high as 70,000 from which already over 1,000 died. In the USA, the number is as high as 70,000 from which already over 1,000 died.
