The exodus of teachers fleeing violence causes education crisis in Kenya

Over recent years, al-Shabaab has recently targeted and killed several non-local Christian teachers in Eastern Kenya. According to the Kenyan Ministry of Education, at least thirty two teachers have been killed in bordering counties between Kenya and Somalia over the past five years. This includes the recent killing of three teachers in Kamuthe, Kenya in January this year.

According to stats given by the ministry of education more than 800 teachers have moved from Garissa, nearly 300 kilometres from Wajir and almost 1,000 kilometres from Mandera. This creates a major problem for the region as the majority of teachers in Kenya come from outside of these three counties.

World Watch Monitor says that locals have reported to them that between 60 and 80 percent of all teachers in Eastern Africa have to come from outside the local Somali population.

It is unclear exactly how Kenya will deal with this issue. Adding to the situation, COVID-19 is starting to spread in Kenya with now at least three confirmed cases in the country. Authorities have already closed all schools and restricted all travel from outside the country.
