Number of assisted suicides rose by 22 percent in one year in the Netherlands

In 2019, 3,122 assisted suicides took place in the Netherlands. This is as much as 22 percent more than in 2018. The Netherlands is one of the few countries in the world where euthanasia is legal. Even children under the age of 12 - with the consent of their parents - can undergo so called euthanasia.
A report submitted by three university hospitals in the lower house of the Dutch Parliament explains that “84 percent of Dutch pediatricians consider euthanasia in the age group of children up to 12 years of age as necessary.” According to doctors, children of this age can already consciously decide whether they want to live or not.
Assisted suicide has been legal in the Netherlands since 2002. In the first year of the new law in force, 1882 cases of euthanasia were recorded there. Today, euthanasia accounts for a quarter of deaths in the Netherlands. It has become the basic “health service” covered by the monthly premium that every Dutch citizen pays to his insurance company.
It is also a very profitable business: for every lethal injection by a doctor, insurance companies pay the clinic about 3,000 euros.
