No more religion classes in Quebec?
The liberal authorities of the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec want to withdraw classes in ethics and religious culture from schools. Instead, children will attend sex education classes as well as courses on the rule of law, democracy, culture and digital citizenship.
The fight against religion at school is one of the consequences of the new law on secularism of the state.
In two years, religious culture is expected to disappear from textbooks. According to the rulers, mentioning her at school “discriminates against atheists”.
Quebec bishops urged the authorities to reconsider this decision. They emphasized that these classes, which were in fact a form of religious studies, contributed to the mutual knowledge and respect of the inhabitants of the region against radical ideologies. The bishops also emphsized to key role that the parents need to fulfill in the spiritual development of their children.
